We are a chapter of The Sunrise Movement in Watertown Massachusetts. Sunrise is a youth-led organization that brings awareness to climate change by advocating for political change. Our main cause is to win a Green New Deal on all levels, which would create millions of jobs and will mobilize the American society to 100% renewable and clean energy over a 10 year span. Our chapter hopes to support the movement at a local level, trying to educate, spread awareness, and to make changes to the world we live in within our community. The climate crisis will be irreversible in less than 10 years, so if we don't take action now, the negative changes to our environment and our resources will be permanent. As youth in America, we are inheriting this world and all of its problems, so advocating for change now is an essential part in ensuring our future.
Our movement gains strength from support from our community, so please join us for any of our upcoming actions! We will be posting updates on this website and our social medias.
Green New Deal
The Green New Deal is a 10 year plan introduced by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts that calls for the United States to take massive federal action to combat climate change, while creating millions of new jobs in clean and renewable energy industries and economic prosperity for all. Rising carbon emissions and temperatures are leading to a number of natural disasters with increasing intensity. To stop this, the US and the rest of the world must reach net-zero emissions, and fast. The Green New Deal calls for the use of renewable and zero-emissions power for electricity and the upgrade of buildings and transportation systems to become more energy-efficient, among a number of other things to reduce carbon emissions. With the expansion and investment in these renewable energy industries, more jobs with good wages will be created to help, boosting the economy and ensuring that all people have access to well-paying work and a just and fair transition. The Green New Deal also focuses on promoting justice and equity by stopping current, preventing future, and repairing historic oppression of indigenous peoples, communities of color, migrant communities, de-industrialized communities, depopulated rural communities, the poor, low-income workers, women, the elderly, the unhoused, people with disabilities, and youth.
